Project Leader:
Dr. Pedro Bernal was born and raised in the Dominican Republic. Since 1986 he has been a member of the Chemistry Department's Faculty at Rollins College in Winter Park, FL. For the last ten years, Dr. Bernal has conducted service learning trips to the Dominican Republic involving students from Rollins College as well as from other institutions. Furthermore, Dr. Bernal is involved in a water purification program that aims to provide residents of rural communities with potable water. He has been associated with the Dominican Foundation and IDDI for the over ten years.

Project Description:
The goal of this project is to provide assistance for some ongoing health projects related to water and sanitation. Volunteers will assist in simple construction projects designed to help the community with their water and sanitation, such as the repair or construction of latrines and community water stations. Additionally, through this project over 450 water filtration systems will be distributed within local communities. Student will assist in the assembly of these filters as well as providing community workshops illustrating the proper use of the filters and the importance of using them.

After two weeks, each participant will have a better understanding of the public health aspects of water and sanitation issues in underdeveloped countries. While working on the project participants will live with local families for the duration of the project, providing an in-depth understanding of local family life and culture, while also providing an opportunity to enrich your Spanish conversation skills. Participants should be aware that the conditions in the communities vary but often are rather primitive. It is not unusual to be in an area with no electricity or running water.

For those interested in extending there stay in the Dominican Republic, and participating in an 8 week water and sanitation project, please contact us for further details.
