The Dominican Republic, like so many other Caribbean and South and Central American countries, is steeped in history, but also currently exists in a dreadful state of poverty. The figures are staggering; Dominicans currently possess the third lowest standard of living in the Western hemisphere. The poverty level in the Dominican Republic today is well above sixty percent, with one-third of the population living in extreme poverty. Illiteracy is also a major hurdle; many Dominicans do not know how to read or write and Dominican children are not receiving an adequate education. Such wide-spread poverty and illiteracy means that many basic human needs, many of which we take for granted and are considered basic rights, are not being met. With your help, so many lives can be bettered.
The Dominican Foundation and its partner, the Dominican Institute for Integral Development have created a volunteer travel program whereby volunteers from the U.S. and other countries can volunteer their time and energy in a region of the world where help is so desperately needed. While volunteering in the Dominican, you will be immersed in the culture of the people as well as exposed to the charm and beauty of the Dominican landscape. As a volunteer with the Dominican Foundation, you will help others to achieve a higher standard of living, and at the same time you will have the chance to experience for yourself the value and allure of another culture.

As a volunteer, you will work alongside engineers, agricultural specialists and medical specialists who are also donating their time and expertise to those Dominicans who have lived their entire lives in abject poverty.
As a volunteer for the Dominican Foundation, you will receive food and accommodations for the duration of your stay. A two-day orientation in Santo Domingo is provided, along with two hours of Spanish Conversation instruction every evening. A full-time professional staff will accompany volunteers throughout the duration of the project, and medical insurance is provided. We ensure that all of your needs are met as you work to help the people of the Dominican Republic escape the poverty, illness and desperation that has become such a central component of their lives.
