Project Description:
In conjunction with Orchidom, the Dominican Republic's largest grower of orchids, this project proposes to reconstruct a primary school that provides education for 120 students in the rural town of Salamanca, 25 kilometers from Santo Domingo. The work includes building a water supply system for the school, improving the roof structure, replacing the doors and windows, and repairing the floor.

The project also proposes to work with the children of the school, providing an extracurricular summer program that would include activities such as organizing craft classes, sports, and visits out of the community to the beach and cultural destinations. Volunteers would be assisting daily in both the construction project and the summer school program.

The community of Salamanca has two key educational problems: 1) the school is in desperate need of renovation, and 2) the school lacks classrooms. Salamanca has 492 residents, 43.5% are less than 18 years old. There are 164 young people between the ages of 6 to 18 years. Only 122 of the 164 attend school and do so within two classrooms.

The children and young people of Salamanca would benefit greatly from the repair of the school infrastructure, an extension of the school, and an increase of the number of the educational personnel. The improved school will also act a safehouse for the community in the time of natural phenomena.
