Project Leader: David Luther
David Luther is the executive director and founder of IDDI. David Luther was born in Brazil, but has lived the past 45 years in the Dominican Republic. IDDI is the major non-profit organization in the Dominican Republic involved in urban development having a full time staff of 75 professionals and an additional part time staff of 226 community and health/environmental sanitation promoters. IDDI has promoted the creation of networks and federations of networks of grass roots organizations in the city of Santo Domingo accompanying them with training in areas such as human rights, formulation of national budgets, project planning and implementation, democracy and political participation.

Project Description:
More than 50% of the economic activity in the DR occurs in the informal sector such as micro-businesses, small shops, street vendors, fruit stands, etc. Since this sector has no access to, nor support from, the formal banking system, IDDI is providing them with job training and credit in order to strengthen the sector. IDDI's micro business programs are primarily in the slums of Santo Domingo, and entail identifying potential participants, evaluating them to determine their credit as well as training needs, assisting them with the correct request forms, and follow-up with the appropriate training. The program will focus on supporting primarily single mothers as this population group tends to be the most poor and marginalized from job opportunities.

Volunteers will work with IDDI professionals; visiting and identiying potential micro-entrepreneurs for the purpose of obtaining micro credit, providing training programs on: how best to use their credit, accounting principles, marketing, and more; evaluating current micro-enterprises, and assisting them in ways to increase their capital.
