The Dominican Foundation has worked with local communities, the Dominican Republic's Ministry of Culture and UNESCO to develop the Dominican Republic crafts and the nation's cultural values.

Crafts not only embody the quest to express the Dominican identity, but also forge a solid link between commerce and tourism. The purpose is to create a "cultural tourism" whereby its aim is to contribute to the development and renewal of the traditional Dominican Craft.

Additionally, The Dominican Foundation goal is to provide a better quality of life for those involved in the craft and tourism informal sectors. This is achieved through the development of new craft micro-enterprises while also providing micro-credit for current craft workshops. The promotion of crafts constitutes another component for enhancing the linkage between culture and development. Anchored in efforts to overcome poverty and to advance sustainable development, the Dominican Foundation and IDDI, develop programs that assist craft workshops and crafts people to deal with issue such as training, promotion and micro-credit.

Program Objectives
  • Provide training workshops for Dominican artists to improve the quality of their crafts which will create and strengthen new craft enterprises.
  • Promote the local crafts in order to increase sales
  • Establish new micro-enterprises that will lead to the increase of employment, and increase the level of income among local families.
  • Develop three regional networks for local crafts, allowing the local artists of these three zones to participate.
  • Ultimately, develop an international market for the sale of Dominican crafts that will help Dominicans to overcome poverty.
